It was the site of the Battle of Yavin when the Galactic Empire found the base and attempted to destroy it with the Death Star. However, the Rebels discovered a weakness in the plans and launched an attack on the battle station. Luke Skywalker launched his proton torpedoes into the station's thermal exhaust port, destroying it.
